Silver Point Walk Details

Overview

A superb and gentle walk from the door of the cottage in Patterdale. Magnificent views of Ullswater and across the dale to Glenridding and towards Helvellyn.

Route

From the cottage turn left and the turn right over Goldrill Bridge. Follow the road to the end and round to the left. Turn right through the gate up onto the fell and head up the path to the left. Climb up past the old quarry on your right and continue until you get to a fork in the path. Head up past the shale to the right up towards another old quarry. There’s a bench at the top so you can rest and soak in the views.

Continue all the way along this path. You’ll see Ullswater off to your left and Side Farm campsite. You’ll also see the lower path that you’ll return on. Keep walking along this path which traverses the side of the fell and you’ll soon start to see Silver Point rises ahead of you.

Take the time to admire the views across the valley over Ullswater towards Glenridding with Helvellyn behind.

You’ll see a path up to your right which takes you up to Kilbert How if you are planning the reverse Place Fell Walk. For Silver point keep on straight into the “lost valley” (our name - you won’t find it on a map!). Go through this and down the steep path. This is Silver Point. If you want to see the “beach” then head through the bracken to the shore line. A great spot for a picnic in the summer.

You’ll find the main path heading south along the shore line. This may be relatively busy as it’s the main route back from the Ullswater Steamer stop at Howtown. Other than one little climb up some steps the path is nice and gentle all the way back to Side Farm.

Here you can either go straight on through the farmyard to join up with the road you started on in Rookings, or turn right through the farm, stop for Ice Cream at the Side Farm Cafe if it’s open, and then follow the farm track towards the school. Before you get to the bridge over Goldrill Beck turn left and follow the path at the side of the beck.

Once through the second gate you have a little stretch of river bank which is Morgan’s favourite spot. Ideal for jumping into the beck and a spot of brown trout tickling if you’re in the mood!

You’re then back onto Goldrill Bridge and back to The How.

Another  fantastic walk!.

Alternate Routes

The most obvious alternative is to do the whole thing in reverse although note the path up from Silver Point to the “lost valley” is quite steep in places!
