Place Fell Walk Details

Overview

A lovely walk from the door of the cottage in Patterdale. You can see Place Fell from the sofa so it would be a shame not to walk up it while you’re staying!

Route

From the cottage turn left and the turn right over Goldrill Bridge. Follow the road to the end and round to the left. Turn right through the gate up onto the fell and head up the path to the right towards Boredale Hause. The path splits after 100 yards or so and you can take either path up to the Hause. We prefer the top one! Continue up until your reach Boredale Hause.

From Boredale Hause head off to the left following the path. The path was all renewed in the last few years so you should see if snaking up in front of you.

Keep going up the path. It veers round to the left and then back to the right and after the second set of “steps” there is a small chimney which you can skirt by veering off on a path to the left.

Place Fell is one of those fells where you think you’ve made it only to find that there’s still another peak after the first false summit. Persevere until you get to the real summit with the cairn on top - the views are truly magnificent on a good day across to Helvellyn, north up Ullswater and to the East over High Street. If you walk towards the western edge you’ll get some great views down to Ullswater and Glenridding as well.

If you have a dog with you (or fancy a dip yourself) watch out for the peat bog puddles on the summit plateau as some of them are really quite deep!

From the summit you can then either retrace your route back down to Boredale, continue on towards Howtown, or take the most direct route down Kilbert How. This can be a little tricky to find off the top but basically if you veer left and keep looking you’ll come across a gully and pick up the top of the path which takes you steeply down to pick up the Silver Point path.

From there you follow the path back along the side of Ullswater and above Side Farm before dropping back into Patterdale.

A splendid walk!

Alternate Routes

As above there are various alternate routes on the way up and down. One way to start the walk is to catch the Ullswater Steamer to Howtown and then walk up from there onto the summit and then drop back down following the “up” route described above. You can also ascend via Kilbert How - it’s easier to find going up but a good deal steeper too!
